Title: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BERTRAND DU GUESCLIN: ...
Publisher: Charleston: John Russell
Publication Date: 1864
Book Condition: Very Good
Edition: 1st Edition
2 vols. 287, 314pp. First edition. Three-quarter vellum and marbled paper boards. Red leather spine label, gilt outlines, moiré bookmarks. Beautiful, a tribute to what fine binding can be. This is a historical work that was printed in London and ran the Federal blockade bearing a publisher’s imprint of only Charleston’s John Russell. As a Confederate imprint, it is not terribly rare. What we have here is a set that did not run the blockade, but remained in England and was clearly specially bound for a person of means. As it, too, bears the Charleston imprint, it is as much a Confederate imprint as the other, which is found only in cloth. The distinguished antiquarian Bailey Bishop believes few, if any, copies of Jamison’s work arrived in the Confederacy, but instead, crates of them were offloaded from a blockade runner and left in Nassau, the Bahamas, where they were sold for a pittance and were (and still are) to be found in numerous libraries there. HARWELL, CORNERSTONES OF CONFEDERATE COLLECTING 12: ‘To the student of Civil War history, the story of the writing and publications of ‘The Life and Times of Bertrand Du Guesclin’ is of greater interest than the content of the volumes the manuscript that Jamison cast upon the waters did return after many days in the shape of two handsome volumes printed in London but bearing the imprint of John Russell of Charleston. Simultaneously a London edition was published with the imprint of Trubner & Co. appearing in conjunction with Russell’s.’ HARWELL, CONFEDERATE HUNDRED 44. CRANDALL 2587.
