About this Item

A stunning and fine binding make this scarce "straight from the horses' mouth" biography quite sought after, and in this gorgeous full-calf binding, extremely attractive to a collector of Western Americana, Gunmen, Lawmakers, True Crime, etc. 416 pp. First Edition, Second State. "Published originally the month following Jesse James's murder in 1882." (Snell, flyleaf) "The facts cited in this extremely scarce biography of Jesse (and Frank) James were dictated to Frank Triplett directly through James's widow (who was his cousin as well), Zerelda (Zee) James and his mother Mrs. Zerelda Samuel. They disputed Triplett's claim for their participation in the writing of the book, but later sued the publisher for nonpayment of what they considered their royalties.," but the publlishers declared that 'persons entertaining any doubt as to the sources of our information or its full and reliable character can have all doubts removed by calling at our office, corner Third and Locust streets, and inspecting the contract, letters, receipts, etc., with which bear the official "marks" of Mrs. James and Mrs. Samuel.' ". The specific amount sought by Mrs. James and Mrs. Samuel was $2150, on a sale of 20,000 copies. The jury, however, found that only 4500 copies had been sold and awarded the two ladies $942." (Snell)An unarmed Jesse James was betrayed and murdered by Robert Ford, an ambitious recent hanger-on and member of his own gang who shot Jesse in the back of the head while James was standing on a chair adjusting a picture frame. Ford had cut a deal with Missouri Governor Thomas T. Crittenden to take out Jesse James for a $5000 reward. "Triplett's book was favorable toward Jesse James, but much less favorable toward Missouri's Governor Crittenden and this fact has led many to suspected that the governor was behind the book's disappearance.".The grave of Jesse Woodson James was still fresh when his grieving but practical mother, Zerelda started selling tours of the family log cabin for a quarter. For another two bits, she'd take your picture next to the gravemarker or let you pick up a pebble from the gravesite. When the pebbles ran low, she'd send a neighbor's kid to the nearby creek for more." (Scott Kraft in The Sunday Oregonian, June 17, 1979). Wright Howes (U.S. Iana) states that 'Triplett's book was issued in three editions, the first in May of 1882, the second between June and November, and the third in November.' Howes also says: 'It is alleged that effforts were made to suppress this biography" (USiana T-355a). Another bibliography cites (the book's suppression) ".because it was very bitter toward the Crittendens, influential citizens of Missouri. (Adams: Six Guns and Saddle Leather, 1017) The scarcity of all issues tends to confirm this." Howe's notes that the first edition has a frontispiece illustration of Jesse returning from a raid ; the verso title page in the second edition is a bust of Jesse. The third edition contains the added chapter on Frank James. OUR COPY bears the frontis depiction of a portrait of Jesse and the "Jesse James Returning Home After A Raid "illlustration -- published as the frontis in other printings -- appears opposite page 72.Ramon F. Adams in his above-cited gold-standard bibliography Six Guns and Saddle Leather : Books and Pamphlets on Western Outlaws and Gunmen has this to say about this edition (p. 356): "An exceedingly rare book, and the few copies in existence are usually in poor condition".
