About this Item

This is a very-good-to-fine first edition with no dust jacket. Edward Bates has been known principally through his diary, which has long been exploited by historians as a rich mine of information and insight. Usually mentioned in studies of the Civil War are Bate's role in the Republican presidential race in 1860 and his defense of Administration policies as Attorney General in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet during the war. His significance as a political figure in a period of transition, however, has been neglected. He was a primary member of Doris Kearns Goodwin's, TEAM OF RIVALS. Bookseller Inventory # 001160
