About this Item

Complete ten volume set: "North Europe, Mediterranean, German, Classic French, Modern French, French Novels, Old Time English, Modern English, American and Real Life." Edited by Julian Hawthorne, the son of Nathaniel of "The Scarlet Letter," and "House of Seven Gables," fame. Julian was something of a prodigal son, convicted and spending a year in federal prison for stock fraud, but also a well-known and respected crime and supernatural fiction writer, as well as a journalist. He covered the Spanish-American War and the Stanford White murder case for the Hearst newspapers while working hard to support his wife and eight children. This 10-volume set, which broke new ground when issued in 1909, includes many authors not considered crime writers in their day -- Balzac and Voltaire, for example, or Kipling and Stevenson -- while providing samples of "expected" writers such as Poe, Collins and Conan Doyle. First Printing, First Edition Thus. Each volume about 350 pages, 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, quarter-bound in red faux leather over red cloth-covered boards, with gold title boxes on the spine and each volume illustrated with a black & white frontispiece. None of the books is fault free: All have some foxing and staining on text edges, end papers and around illustrations. All text edges are to some degree soiled, some very lightly, others quite heavily. Also some volumes' frontispieces have come loose from the binding though all are present with their tissue protectors. The previous owner's name and date are neatly written on the fep of each book. The covers show only minimal edge and surface wear. That all said, this very scarce complete set looks quite presentable on the shelf and contains more than 3,000 pages of good writing. Sold only as a set. (Sorry but the set is fairly bulky and heavy and will require about $12 extra postage. Also, we are unable to accept priority/express orders or orders from outside the U.S.).
