Description:

Interesting Research Revealed: Nabokov finished LOLITA on 6 December 1953, five years after starting it. Due to its subject matter, Nabokov intended to publish it pseudonymously (although the anagrammatic character Vivian Darkbloom would tip off the alert reader). The manuscript was turned down, with more or less regret, by Viking, Simon & Schuster, New Directions, Farrar - Straus and Doubleday. The book was banned from publication for two years. Eventually, at the very end of 1955, Graham Greene, in the (London) Sunday Times, called it one of the three best books of 1955. This statement provoked a response from the (London) Sunday Express, whose editor John Gordon called it: "the filthiest book I have ever read" and "sheer unrestrained pornography." Its eventual British publication by Weidenfeld & Nicholson caused a scandal that contributed to the end of the political career of one of the publishers, Nigel Nicholson. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The dustjacket is a facsimile, which was reproduced from an original first printing, from 1959, and it fits the book perfectly. Small nick on spine above the 'V' in Vladimir. Overall: the dustjacket is fabulous! The dustjacket was designed by Eric Ayers. Retains price of 21s net to the inner front prelim. The dustjacket is now housed in a plastic archival sleeve. Black Boards with silver gilt lettering to the spine. Lightly bumped corners. Occasional small mark, otherwise very clean and tightly bound to the inner page block. Red topstain apparent but faded. Occasional light foxing, mainly to page edges, otherwise pages are clean and tightly bound. There is an appendix to the rear of the book which states: Some Critics' opinions about LOLITA: The opinions come from all around the world: V.S. PRITCHETT, GRAHAM GREENE, PHILIP TOYNBEE, MAURICE CRANSTON, GEORGE MILLER, KENNETH ALLSOP, BERNARD LEVIN, LORD BOOTHBY, TERRENCE RATTIGAN. THERE IS A LETTER TO THE TIMES BY NUMEROUS WRITERS STATING THEY WANTED TO READ THE BOOK. THEY INCLUDED: J.R. ACKERLEY, IRIS MURDOCH, WALTER ALLEN, WILLIAM PLOMER, ISAIH BERLIN, ALAN PRYCE-JONES, C.M. BOWRA, PETER QUENNELL, STORM JAMESON, HERBERT READ, FRANK KERMODE, STEPHEN SPENDER, ALLEN LANE, MARGARET LANE, BERNARD WALL, ROSAMUND LEHMANN, ANGUS WILSON and COMPTON MACKENZIE. LIONEL TRILLING, TAYLOR CALDWELL, JAMES M. CAIN, MEYER LEVIN, DOROTHY PARKER, GENE BARO, GRANVILLE HICKS, LEWIS VOGLER, TIME, CHARLES ROLO, DOMINIQUE AURY, CLAUDE JULIEN, KLEBER HAEDENS, ROBERT KEMP, FRANCOIS-REGIS BASTID, THOMAS KARL, ALBERTO MORAVIA, ELIO VITTORINI, JEAN BLOCH-MICHEL, ERLING CHRISTIE, HEIKKI BROTHERUS and TOM KRISTENSEN. I wanted to make a note of them all to show interested parties just how controversial this story was back in the 1950's. - FREE WORLDWIDE POSTAGE WITH FULL INSURANCE - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
