About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for LONDON TO THE NORE by Wyllie W. L. and M. A.

Description:

First Edition. Impressively illustrated with sixty plates in colour from oils and watercolours by William L. Wyllie and additionally, with 28 black and white pictorial head or tail pieces throughout. Large 8vo, in the publisher's original redwood coloured cloth, pictorially decorated in black and gilt in all over designs on the upper cover and in black on the spine, with gilt lettering on both upper cover and spine, t.e.g. ix, 260 pp. A superb and beautiful copy, the cloth in excellent shape with no fading, with nice sharp corners and bright decoration, internally the hinges are strong and tight, the textblock solid and fresh and especially well preserved for a book that is highly prone to foxing. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH NICE, BRIGHT CONDITION. The work features the paintings of William Lionel Wyllie, "the most distinguished marine artist of his day." - National Museum Royal Navy. His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and many other institutions but Wyllie is perhaps best known for his 42-foot panorama of the Battle of Trafalgar (which was unveiled by King George V) seen by about 100,000 people every year where it still hangs in the Royal Naval Museum within the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth. The paintings and accompanying text collected here bring to life the busy shipping traffic and bustle of waterside activities along the Thames River from Westminster to 'the Nore' at the mouth of the Thames Estuary where the river meets the North Sea. One can't help but wonder how Wyllie and his wife Marion Amy found the time to work on such an impressive book as between 1880 and 1904 Mrs. Wyllie bore nine children. Meanwhile, Wyllie exhibited paintings and etchings shown at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, the Grosvenor Gallery, the New English Art Club, the Society of British Artists, the Dowdeswell Galleries and the Fine Art Society. And all this while campaigning vigorously for the restoration of HMS Victory as a founder member of the Society for Nautical Research. Wyllie was the most distinguished marine artist of his day and his work is still in great demand. From 1906, when he moved to Portsmouth, he became closely associated with the Royal Navy. So much so, indeed, that he was buried with full naval honours in 1931. In a moving ceremony, reminiscent of Nelsonís state funeral in 1806, his body was rowed up Portsmouth Harbour in a naval cutter past battleships with dipped colours and bugles calling and quaysides lined with dockyard workers.
