About this Item

A Harvest book. SIGNED and INSCRIBED in black ink by the author on the half title-page: "for (illegible recipient's name) with the author's compliments, V.S. Pritchett." ***Very good in illustrated, slightly browned and worn thin card wrappers. Spine tight. Front wrapper creased at bottom and bottom corner, and at both corners on back wrapper. ***184 mm x 110 mm. 185 printed pages including index.***'V.S. Pritchett's much acclaimed text for this book, originally published with illustrations, is a witty and knowing distillation of London - a panorama of its history, art, literature, and life. This is the city that Londoners know, a paradox of ancient and modern, of grandeur and grime, a place of bustling markets and tranquil parks, of palaces and pubs. ***Great Londoners of the past walk in these pages, and here are the people who inhabit London today. In these loving, yet penetrating observations of a great city's past and present, London is magnificently brought to life.' (Quote taken from back of wrapper). ***An uncommon signed and inscribed first US paperback. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
