A small quarto measuring 10 by 7 inches. Without a dust jacket as issued. Signed by the two editors of the original manuscript, Helen Winslow Chase and Edourard A. Stackpole, on the title page. Also, laid-in at the front of the book is a newspaper article dated November 29, 1984 regarding the publication of this title. 87 pages of text illustrated with photographs of earlier works of art and facsimile images of title pages of two of the early printed publications regarding the loss of the ship Essex. The manuscript which is the primary subject of this publication was written in 1876 by Thomas Nickerson, "one of the five men who survived the open boat voyage which followed" the loss of the ship. This manuscript was not discovered for almost a century after it was written. This is its first publication. A very clean and handsome copy with no ownership markings of any kind.
