Book Description Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 1953. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression, undated but pencil note on ffep '1953'. some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some browning and general time staining, corners scuffed, dust staining to page fore edges, not price clipped (10s 6d), previous owner's stamp on back endpaper, no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 191pp. The story of the hunt for the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine (also known by many similar names), supposedly a very rich gold mine hidden in the Superstition Mountains, near Apache Junction, east of Phoenix, Arizona in the United States. No one truly knows where the mine is, because the Dutchman kept it a complete secret. Many have died searching for it. The mine is named after German immigrant Jacob Waltz ("Dutchman" was a common, though inaccurate, American slang term for "German," derived from the German word for "German" ¿ "Deutsch"), and it is perhaps the most famous lost mine in American history: Arizona place-name expert Byrd Granger notes that, as of 1977, the Lost Dutchman story was printed or cited at least six times more often than two other fairly well known tales, the story of Captain Kidd's lost treasure, and the story of the Lost Pegleg mine in California. Apparently some 8,000 people annually make some effort to locate the Lost Dutchman's mine, including former Arizona Attorney General Bob Corbin. Others have argued the mine has little or no basis in fact and is a legend. According to many versions of the tale, the mine is either cursed, or protected by enigmatic guardians who wish to keep its location a secret. Quite a scarce book. Seller Inventory # 001722

Book Description William Morrow and Co., New York, 1953. Hardcover. First edition. New York: William Morrow and Co., 1953. [6], 178, [1] pages. Original maroon cloth, spine stamped in yellow. Endpaper maps. [20.8 cm.] Near fine in very good dust jacket. Neat name on blank upper margin of front free endpaper (not affecting map), very slightly cocked, else an excellent copy. Jacket shows a little wear to extremities; several short and mostly closed tears; and some minor rubbing and soil. FIRST EDITION. A noteworthy account of the quest for the legendary lost mine in the Superstition Mountains. The author discusses various stories related to the origin and location of the Lost Dutchman, as well as his own attempts to find the mine. Ely searched for many years in partnership with James E. Bark, a prominent cattleman who owned a ranch in the vicinity. Sims Ely (1862-1954) was the publisher and editor of the Arizona Republican; secretary to Joseph Henry Kibbey, governor of Arizona Territory (1905-1909); a banker; and the manager of Boulder City, the town constructed by the government to house the workers who built Hoover Dam (1931-1941). This was his first and only book. Seller Inventory # 0000295
