Synopsis: Sarah's thoughtless remark that she wished the goblins would take her little brother lead her and the boy into the dangerous world of the goblin king.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-5 Sarah has trouble coming to terms with the arrival of her new half-brother, Toby. One evening while babysitting, a frustrated Sarah says, "I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now!" Unknowingly, Sarah has uttered just the right words, and the goblins, accompanied by their king, appear in the nursery and whisk away the infant. Sarah finds herself lost in a Labyrinth with only 13 hours to discover the secret to the maze and rescue her brother before he becomes a goblin forever. Sarah has many trials, meets several unusual creatures, and must solve many puzzles but ultimately reaches the center of the Labyrinth and, through the power of love, destroys the goblin king and returns her brother to their home. As often happens when a book is based on a motion picture, the print version suffers terribly. Many readers will have already seen the movie and will find that the book lacks the suspense that special effects add. The extraordinary creatures mentioned in the text, while faithfully rendered by McNally based on Jim Hensen's creations, are never fully explained or developed, and the heroine predictably saves the day. This would be a trendyand superfluousaddition to library collections. Pamela T. Childs, Westover Hills Elementary School, Richmond, Va.
