Fifth American from the third London edition with additions. Collates as: [fp], [3-5], 6-253, [254-255], 256-521, [3], [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. Original full brown calf leather binding; rubbed and scuffed boards with bumped corners, top corners also worn, some splitting along front joint but binding is firm, small chip at spine head, shallow edge loss to spine's original maroon title label which retains still fairly bright gilt lettering. Antiquarian ink notation on front pastedown; varied toning to leaves; some light black spotting to rear endpapers. As cited in the aforementioned collation the book lacks several preliminary leaves including a ffep and title leaf which is presumably pages [1-2] with first leaf present opposite front pastedown being the Preface, i.e. pages [3-4]. Dictionary begins on page [5] all in double-column text and is printed as two volumes in one with Volume I containing letters A-K inclusive to page 253 and Volume II containing L-Z and running from page [255] to 521. Publisher's three page advertising section at rear features list of titles available "from the presses of W.W. Woodward. Philadelphia , November, 1817." Single column text for Preface and advertising section. OCLC citations along with the book's collation and publisher list allow for a fairly firm attribution that this copy is indeed an 1818 Philadelphia W.W. Woodward imprint.
