Synopsis: The book is a coming of age story of a girl named Jesse who spends the summer at her grandfather's cottage on one of the Great Lakes. as her parents work through some marital problems. A chance encounter with a friendly little dog in the woods leads to her grandfather, in a magical story within the story, relating the legend of a plucky Cairn Terrier washed ashore in a ferocious Great Lakes storm in the 1800s. Rescued by the lighthouse keeper's daughter, Laddie proves himself an asset to the light saving crew and a loyal friend to the little girl who loved him. Could Jesse's encounter with the friendly dog in the woods be the legendary Laddie?
