About this Item

This is the REAL THING. Appears to be a first edition but in fact, the same book was published in 1850 by F. J. Dow & Co, This version (1852) shows an 1852 copyright by E. Hutchinson, presumed to be the author. Brown blind-stamped boards are quite faded but have only minimal wear at foredge tips. Spine intact. The front board has a gilt motif of either a vase or a fountain, with gilt title (Family Manual) and filigree on spine. Binding is sound but is just beginning to open a bit (1/4") at bottom of title page. Pages have some foxing throughout.Pagination is peculiar in that it runs from Contents Page through page 7 (which is beginning of section for Married Ladies) as unpaginated, then on verso of page 7. begins numbered pages at 8-72. The section of Valuable Recipes has no number on the first page but starts numbered pages at 8-48. Section on Ettiquette for Ladies and Gentlemen has no number on the first page, but verso has 122 thens runs to 129. Ladies' Toilette Table starts with unnumbered page but is followed by131. Canary Birds page and Lady's Work Box start are not numbered but verso of the latter has 134 and runs through 136. Mixture for Washing, not numbered but verso is page 138. NOTHING IS MISSING. All said, a well preserved copy. Bookseller Inventory # 004741
