About this Item

This heavily illustrated 1846 Bible belonged to George A. Lally and his second wife, Harriet F. (Hanford) Lally. The family records pages list 3 marriages, the birth records of 4 generations, and a page of deaths. Additional information is found in Vol. 2 of the "Hudson - Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs", pages 903-904, by Cuyler Reynolds. George Abbott Lally was born in New York City in 1818, and had one older brother, James Lally, who died in 1839. George A. Lally's father was John Lally of N.Y.C., who fought in the Revolutionary War, and worked as a cabinetmaker. George Lally's parents both died when he was young and he was supported by his brother, who had shoe factories in New Orleans and in Norwalk, Conn. Upon his brother's death, he inherited the shoe factories, and upon moving to Chicago, invested in Chicago real estate, and was the major stockholder in the "Western Plank Road Co." (railway). He also had shares in the "Galena and Chicago Union R.R., and owned "Belaire (sugar) Plantation" along the Mississippi River in Louisiana. Upon retiring at the age of 40, he moved back to Lansingburg, where he was involved with the "Troy and Lansingburg Horse R.R", was a trustee of Lansingburg Academy, and was an officer of Lansingburg Bank. This Bible records James Lally (1841-1878), who was his son by his first wife, Frances B. (Buckingham St. John) Lally, but has no record of his first wife. There are 13 birth records and 8 death records of George A. Lally (1818-1881) and his second wife, Harriet F. (Hanford) Lally (1830-1890), their 3 children, George, Frederick, and Fannie, who were born between 1852 and 1857, Frederick's 4 children, Marion (Marian Leonard), Edith, George Leonard, and Dorothy, who were born between 1885 and 1898, and 4 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Alexander born 1916, Alexander Alexander Jr. born 1918, Margaret Darling Lally born 1927, and Richard Henry Lally 1933-1991, which is the last entry. The Bible has both hinges cracked, with both covers very shaky, the spine leather is chipped, but with most of the gilt lettering on the spine intact. The full leather covers are very rubbed, with the covers' corners bared, showing the underlying cardboard. Bookseller Inventory # 14277
