About this title

Synopsis:

It's a story of New York City and the Hudson Valley during the 17th-century change from Dutch to English rule, which spins out to Europe and then to the West Indies as a page-turning tale of money, power, greed, revenge and, surprisingly enough, true love.

From the Publisher:

Set during the transition from Dutch to English rule in 1664-1674, LAND IN THE SKY sheds light on the Dutchwomen who suffered the loss of their equal economic privileges under English law. Half-represented in history as sisters, mothers and wives to men, these women were raised in Dutch custom to be capable, independent thinkers. They did not submit meekly to the English law that took away their property rights upon marriage. Many women closed up shop in New York and returned to Holland - going in the opposite direction the Duke of York needed to civilize his province. It is the spirit of the courageous women who remained and their men, whose faith in the land left a lasting imprint on American culture and society, which is captured in LAND IN THE SKY.
