Ten panoramic chromolithograph glass lantern slides created for toy lanterns. Possibly German, probably late nineteenth, early twentieth century. Eight with red tape around edges measuring 5 1/8 long by 1 3/8 wide and two measuring 6 inches long by 1.5 inches high with faded tape around edges. Depictions: 1. Two men sitting in sun at table, move table, forget table base, set table in shade, drop table. 4 circular scenes. 2. Male monkey with horn, male monkey with accordion, female monkey cleaning, female monkey with baby. 4 circular scenes. 3. Couple riding in car circa 1900 style, car hitting stone, car tipping over, car being pulled by horse. 4 circular scenes. Some scratches. 4. Boys looking at car circa 1900, boys joyriding in car, plunging into water. being rescued, in trouble. 5 circular scenes. Some scratches. 5. Four types of boats: gondola, outrigger canoe, eskimo in kayak, Chinese junk. 4 circular scenes. 6. Man at lake, swimming, boys watching, clothes stolen, man running with umbrella and shirt on. 5 circular scenes. Scratches. 7. Boy in hammock, butterfly, chases butterfly, falls out of hammock. 4 circular scenes. Mended with tape. 8. Man on bike, man on bike with sail, racing dog, firing gun from bike. 4 circular scenes. Blue background. 9. Man with sausages, artist drawing, man walking with cane, man drinking. 4 scenes, continuous. Some soot on glass. 10. Fontaneda Books is named in honor of the now defunct Fontaneda Society, a book collectors group that was based at the Broward County Libraries in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for many years. The group took its name after that of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda (c. 1536-after 1575), a Spaniard, who survived a shipwreck along the coast of what is now Florida. He lived with the native Indians for 17 years before being rescued. After his return he wrote his memoirs and this work is considered to be first book to describe Florida. An English translation of his work is available. Fontaneda Books was founded in 2011 by Nora J. Quinlan. Nora is a graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar and a recipient of the 2011 Faculty scholarship. She has worked in rare books and special collections at three institutions over a period of twenty years. Fontaneda Books specializes in the selling of antiquarian books, manuscripts, maps and prints. Fontaneda Books also can advise collectors and on how to dispose of their collections.
