About this Item

Paris, F. Delaulne u. a., 1719-1724. Large folio (450 x 290 mm). 5 vols. in 10 and 5 supplementary vols.; altogether 15 vols. First edition with the five volumes 1724 supplements. Contemp. full calf on six raised bands with spines completley gilt tooled and double gilt-stamped red and black spine labels. Covers with elaborated gilt rules; All edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Magnificent rare set of Montfaucon’s landmark work on classical archaeology, complete with all plates according to Brunet (which gives the most complete collation: portrait +1394 engraved plates). A splendid copy, ex-libris Prince of Wales. Armorial bookplates on front pastedown with Royal Coat of Arms with lion and unicorn and moto of the Order of the Garter „Honi soit qui mai y pense”, armorial bookplate on back pastedown with monogram with royal crown and motto of the Order of the Garter. First and last pages (pages de garde) avec fleurs de lys in filigran. Completley gilt edges. Inside perfectly clean (see photos). B. de Montfaucon (1655-1741), Benedictine of the Congregation of Saint-Maur devoted to historical and ecclesiastical scholarship, is regarded as the father of Archaeology and Greek paleography. "His Antiquité surveyed in fifteen volumes the social and artistic aspects of the ancient civilizations; and the unfinished Monuments de la Monarchie Française tried to do the same for early French history. These works can well be called foundation stones of scientific archaeology" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.175). “As this work has never been completely replaced, it still conserves its long-standing value. This edition (first one 1719 + supplements 1724) is the best, and beautiful copies are not easy to come by” (Brunet 28960). Text in french and latin. Volumes with minor expert restorations, some hinges slightly split on a few volumes without affecting the binding, but with less age wear than expected considering the size of this large set. Overall a very good copy, extremley hard to find in such a beautiful condition and complete of all plates. Splendid bindings and magnificent provenance.". Bookseller Inventory # 888
