About this title

Synopsis:

Surveys findings on Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, and four other examples of the largest dinosaurs, including the locations of the discoveries and explanations of their names.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5 An excellent complement to Simon's The Smallest Dinosaurs (Crown, 1982). The Largest Dinosaurs contains much basic information on six major sauropods. Simon's prose is clear and focused; children will have no difficulty gleaning facts from the two to three pages of information provided for each dinosaur. Pronounciations of the dinosaurs' names, explanations of what the names mean, and an index also help make this book accessible to children. Although other books, such as Eldridge's The Giant Dinosaurs (Troll, 1980) mention some of these sauropods, their scope is wider, and, in the case of Eldridge's book, the information is dated. Simon's book explains recent changes in dinosaur theory, including a discussion of the Brontosaurus' name change to Apatosaurus, and the confusion over the correct Apatosaurus skull. Carroll's ink and wash illustrations give a clear feel for the size of these creatures, but their lack of color may lose the attention of children expecting full-color prehistoric dioramas. Still, this book will be well-used both by young researchers and dinosaur fans. Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
