Very Good copy: shows light wear to the extremities and moderate rubbing to the wrapper covers; tiny burn hole at rear panel which burned through the rear endpapers. The price has been blocked out; there is a hairline crease at backstrip; The binding, while not fully 'cracked', opens a little more easily a one page in the center of the text. Though a little worn and with pages that are tanned slightly, due to aging, this is a structurally sound, tightly bound copy with pages intact and with binding secure: clean, sturdy, presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Big Little Book #5762. 32mo., with many color illustrations. Paperback: Pictorial Wraps. The Whitman Big Little Book series was published in the late 1960s and is based largely on TV shows of the period. Each facing page has a full color illustration with caption. Surprisingly enough, the writers tried to make the stories interesting enough for adults, who, I presume, they thought would be reading these books along with their kids. In LASSIE AND THE SHABBY SHEIK, Lassie and her master Corey travel to the Australian Outback to explore the natural wonders of the region. Unfortunately, they run afoul of a violent criminal called the Shabby Sheik who is bent on despoiling the fragile environment and the people of the Outback. These books are fairly advanced in terms of storyline and language. In LASSIE AND THE SHABBY SHEIK, the young reader is introduced to the Aborigines of Australia, to the fact that the Australian Park Rangers use camels as pack animals, and that foreign cultures and the natural world are worth preserving. For 1968, those ideas were revolutionary. This book made me interested in the culture of the Aborigines and sympathetic to them. I also learned the words "Sheik", "dromedary", "Outback", "Aboriginal" and the expression, "Are you game?" I was eight years old, and developing a strong vocabulary and an understanding of other cultures and countries. I think that was well worth the purchase price of 39 Cents!. Bookseller Inventory #
