About this Item

First edition, one of only 100 copies printed. Francis' last book, an exceptionally fine example of a bookmaker¿s art. Designed and bound by David Bourbeau at the Thistle Bindery, with two photographs of Francis by Robert Lyons and Frank Faulkner, printed in gravure, made from negatives and etched in copperplate by Jon Goodman, inked and hand-pulled by Sara Krohn. Title-page calligraphy by Suzanne Moore. Printed by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. Signed by the artists. The binding, a contemporary adaptation of a classical Renaissance style, is sewn in boards overlaid with textured linen-cotton cover paper molded for this edition at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. The cream-colored cover, with 24-karat gold-tooled lines representing the title poem, opens easily on crimson end leaves. Printed on Fabriano Umbria handmade book paper. The typeface is Monotype Dante. Robert Francis (1901-1987) lived with Thoreauvian simplicity in Amherst, cultivated his poetry, writing reflections of rural New England and quiet, profound meditations and subtly entertaining poetry. Frost said of him, "of all the great neglected poets- the greatest." This edition does justice to the poet's life work. Housed in a clamshell case. As New. Bookseller Inventory # 004697
