Synopsis: A biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the "Little House" books, from her Wisconsin childhood until her death at the age of ninety.
From Booklist: Reviewed with David and Patricia Armentrout's Matthew Henson.
Gr. 1-3. Titles in the new Discover a Life of an American Legend series feature the same small, nearly square format often favored by Rourke, with each spread presenting a short paragraph opposite a crisp, full-page photo. In Laura Ingalls Wilder, the photographs, culled from archives at the Wilder Home and Museum in Missouri, will fascinate children eager to see the "real" Laura. Matthew Henson profiles a lesser-known historical figure, the African American explorer who accompanied Robert Peary on the first North Pole expedition. Unfortunately, the photos are less intriguing. Children will find a few portraits of an aging Henson, but the rest are disappointingly generic Arctic scenes or images of a triumphant Peary. Both titles include a glossary, although its brevity and selectivity limits its usefulness. Even so, these provide solid introductions to noteworthy individuals in a format that caters to beginning readers. Further readings are appended. Jennifer Mattson
