First published in 1676, this treatise discusses Queen Elizabeth's 1601 Statute of Charitable Uses, the act that established the legal definition of a private charity. Holdsworth, who considered this an important book, notes "[it] sets out the statute, the commission thereunder, the proceedings to call the parties, the inquisition, the decree, and cases decided upon the statute. It also gives examples of pleadings and decrees. The most useful parts of the book are the fifth and sixth chapters, which contain the selection of cases upon the statute." Particular attention is given to the Mortmain Act of 1736, which fundamentally affected charitable gifts of land for over a century. Holdsworth, A History of English Law VI:616.
