Book Description State House Press, Austin, Texas, U.S.A., 1999. Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Timmons, David - Cover Design (illustrator). First Edition. 403 Pages Indexed. Maroon boards with gold spine lettering. Tight bright book with a very light, barely noticeable cocked spine. Flawless interior text pages. The author continues his saga of the Texas Rangers with this history of one of the most fascinating periods in their history -- the three decades prior to the turn of the century when the famous Frontier Battalion of the Texas Rangers wound up its mission of combating Indians and began to concentrate on chasing the outlaws rampant during the last days of frontier Texas. The era of Sam Bass, John Wesley Hardin, King Fisher and the Sutton-Taylor Feud provides the framework for the activities of legendary Rangers such as Lee Hall, John Hughes, Bill McDonald, N.O. Reynolds, Dan Roberts, Bass Outlaw and Lee McNelly, and for other Rangers such as John Armstrong, G.W. Arrington and George Baylor who should be better known for their contributions to the legends. This is the era during which the Wild West gave a certain legendary twist not just Texan lore but to all of American history. It is also the era of transition in which the Rangers began to use the railroad as much as they did their horses, and when the telegraph and telephone began to aid the Rangers' lawkeeping efforts. Contents in 12 Chapters: Reconstruction in Texas 1865-1873, The Frontier Battalion 1874, A Smaller Frontier Battalion 1875-1876, McNelly's Boys 1875-1876, Changing Missions 1877, Sam Bass and Other Bad Men 1878, The Changing Frontier 189-1880, The Vanishing Frontier 1881-1882, Much Work Little Glory 1883-1885, Fence Cutter and Troubleshooters 1886-1889, End of An Era 1890-1900, and Ranger Camp Life. Plus Appendices with four seperate lists of Ranger Forces. Size: 6 1/2" X 9 1/2". Seller Inventory # 15171
