About this title

Over 140 million people in the United States have mercury (which is more poisonous than arsenic or lead) implanted in their teeth as "silver " dental fillings. Each "silver" filling contains 45-60% mercury and only about 30% silver. Mercury fillings constantly release mercury vapor. Every time you breathe, you are inhaling a small quantity of mercury vapor into your lungs, where 80-100% of it is absorbed and enters the blood stream. Medical scientists are beginning to demonstrate adverse effects from inhaled dental mercury vapor. The dental establishment has aggressively attempted to contain the negative aspects of "silver" dental fillings. Containment has been pursued through every means available including the persecution of dentists who do not use mercury/silver amalgam as a dental filling material and who attempt to inform their patients of the facts regarding the potential negative health effects of chronic exposure to mercury vapor. The Law and Mercury-free dentistry provides the historical and current legal perspectives of how the law surrounds the mercury issue and the practice of dentistry. The law, not a dental trade association, will provide the ultimate answer to the questions of whether dentists have the right and duty to practice mercury-free dentistry; utilize alternative non-mercury containing materials; and employ and advocate protocols that contribute to and help each patient toward a goal of optimum oral health.
