About this Item

448 clean, unmarked pages; dj w/unclipped price, in mylar; Although not the earliest biography published about T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), this one was perhaps the most controversial. The poet, novelist, and biographer Aldington (1892-1962) called this work an "enquiry" because it offers an exploration of Lawrence's psyche. Aldington begins with the revelation that Lawrence was really the son of a bigamist named Chapman, and finds in that fact the key to the "tortured soul" of his subject, and for the mixture of mystification and self-aggrandizement with which Lawrence constructed his own persona. The London "Times" called it "an admirable biography, honest in intention, affectionate in spirit, and generous in appreciation," but some admirers of Lawrence felt it defamed their hero.
