About this title

Synopsis:

The history of Louisiana is replete with many prominent personalities who were instrumental in guiding the social and political direction of the state through the portentous decades of the nineteenth century. This book undertakes an examination of a major contributor to events in Louisiana and in the South during the last century who has been largely overlooked by historians. Though some attention has been given to Duncan Farrar Kenner's Civil War exploit of undertaking a hazardous diplomatic mission to Europe during the war's final days in a last desperate attempt by the South to stave off defeat, this work is the first in-depth examination of his life and contributions.
There were individuals in Louisiana who rose for periods of time to greater levels of political and social influence; however, no other individual in nineteenth-century Louisiana sustained as high a position of influence for a longer period of time than Duncan Kenner. On first view his life appears to personify much of the glamorized "moonlight and magnolias" culture that has characterized so much of literature on the nineteenth-century South. However, this examination of Kenner reveals a far more capitalistic and multi-dimensional existence than the seigniorial lifestyle associated with the Southern planter.
The author offers the reader not only a fresh look at an important Louisianian of the past but also places Kenner within the perspective of his times.

Store Description

Thank you for taking an interest in one of our books. Please see the "Shipping Terms" section below for details on our shipping and returns policies. We are a mail-order only bookstore located in Bellingham, WA specializing in modern out-of-print books of all genres. We thoroughly clean all books that we offer for sale and do all basic book-repairs ourselves. Basic repairs include repairing slanted bindings, applying additional glue to hinges that have become excessively loose, hinge-tape repairs for damaged hinges, minor binding split repairs, gluing small tears in exterior of covers, removal (as much as possible) of black marker marks to covers of ex-library books, removal of smaller non-permanent stickers, straightening of minor bowing to covers or spine, and applying jacket protectors to books with torn or fragile jackets or for especially pristine or collectible books. We do not do major binding repairs, and any un-repairable binding splits or general weakness in binding will be noted. Any significant repairs such as a hinge-tape repair will also be noted. These repairs do not usually change the underlying condition grade, but do make the book more presentable. Some books are beyond help and will be listed as "Fair/Acceptable" or "Poor". We do not follow ILAB grading guidelines as we sell newer books across many venues. Our grading system is based mainly on Amazon's grading system. Former library copies are never graded above "Good" regardless of level of wear. We watch closely for any signs of water damage, and even minor water damage will be graded no better than "Good," and all signs of water exposure will be noted. Below is a list of the condition grades we use, in descending order: New/Fine Like New/Near Fine Very Good++ Very Good+ Very Good Minus Good++ Good+ Good Fair-to-Good Fair/Acceptable Poor Very Poor We try to grade accurately, but condition grades are often subjective, so our grading in on the conservative side.
