Octavo. xli, 536, 3 folding maps, xxvi, 596, 3 folding maps, xxxii, 429pp. Three-quarter black leather over black pebbled cloth with raised bands and gold lettering on spine. Marbled edges and endpapers. A history of ancient Israel with 5 maps, partly in color, and one floor plan of the Mosque at Hebron. Vol. I covers the period from Abraham to Samuel, Vol. II up to the destruction of the First Temple while the final volume covers the time up to the Christian era. The author was the dean of Westminster, a noted scholar of Christian history and a leading figure in the liberal wing of the Anglican Church. This history is based on a series of lectures he gave and they were first published in 1862. The third volume was not published until 1876. Our copies for the first two volumes are from the 4th edition of 1866 while the 3rd volume is a third edition from 1879. Some wear and scuffing to leather of covers. Ex Libris of previous owner on each inside cover. Overall in good+ condition. Seller Inventory # 36124
