STEWART, ALVAN. A Legal Argument before the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey, at the May Term, 1845, at Trenton, for the Deliverance of Four Thousand Persons from Bondage. New York, 1845. 52 p. Wrappers. The argument of Alvan Stewart, a prominent abolitionist, in a test case arranged by New Jersey abolitionists to determine the effect of the recently adopted New Jersey constitution on the institution of slavery in the state. Stewart's argument, which occupied about eleven hours, was an eloquent appeal for the unconstitutionality of slavery. See Felcone, New Jersey Books (2nd edn.), 2108, for a lengthy discussion of this important case. Seller Inventory # 12974
