About this title
Gr 8 Up-An evenhanded and well-organized examination of legalized gambling in the United States. Historical background is impressive: it traces various gambling practices from ancient times to the present and is enhanced by period photographs, portraits, handbills, and posters. Readers will be surprised to learn that the Jamestown settlement, the American Revolution, and both Dartmouth and Harvard were partially financed through lotteries. Also of note is the chapter dealing with the strategies casinos employ to keep their customers playing. The sophistication of the casinos' techniques is likely to come as a shock to those unfamiliar with this industry. The portrayal of legalized gambling is by no means entirely negative, however. Hjelmeland points out that both jobs and tax revenues have been produced by legal operations and that for a great number of people, gambling is a relatively harmless activity. With impressive documentation of sources and a simple, straightforward style, this title is a model of nonfiction writing for this age group. However, libraries that already own either William Thompson's Legalized Gambling (ABC-Clio, 1994) or Charles Cozic's Gambling (Greenhaven, 1995) may find that their needs in this area have already been met.-Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VT
