Description:

This is a prevously used book in good reading condition. The edges of the cover are very slightly scuffed. The book was originally written in german by the author in 1955 and was translated for this edition by Maurice Friedman. The subject of the book is the message of Hasidism to the modern reader. Hasidism is practised by a sect of Jews. The founderof the sect was Rabbi Israel ben Iliezer (called the Baal-Shem or the Master of God's Name), who lived in early 18th century Europe. The Baal-Shem was a charismatic teacher who stressedinner revival in religionand the enthusiasm of a simple joyful faith, rather than traditioal learning of a fixed doctrne. The author concentrates less on the development and decline of the sect, but focusses on the life in relation to God and to the world that these men intended amd sought. The firat part of the book expounds the major concepts of Hasidic life: ecstasy that 'unlocks the meaning of life', the mystic offering of 'service', and humility. This account is followed by twenty stories about the the life of Baal-Shem. About this title:

Synopsis: These twenty captivating stories about the founder of the Hasidic faith Israel ben Eliezer called the Baal-Shem or Master of God's Name, provide a profound and charming account of the genesis of Hasidism, still Judaism's most important religious movement. As a delicate and moving portrayal not only of the power of the Baal-Shem's mystical faith, but also of Eastern European Jewish daily life, The Legend of the Baal-Shem is an ideal introduction to Hasidic religious thought, and to Martin Buber's own influential philosophy of love and mutual human understanding.

From the Back Cover:

"All positive religion rests on an enormous simplification of the manifold and wildly engulfing forces that invade us: it is the subduing of the fullness of existence. All myth, in contrast, is the expression of the fullness of existence, its image, its sign; it drinks incessantly from the gushing fountains of life."--Martin Buber, from the introduction
