About this Item

Boards covered in illustrated vellum with two brass clasps at fore-edge and title in gilt onto spine, 8vo (7-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches [19 x 13.9 cm]), bottom and fore-edges untrimmed, top edge trimmed and stained red, pp. 176. Text printed in black and red, illustrations throughout, with one print being a double-sided fold-out. Upper board, edges, spine bottom and fore-edges of text quite darkened - as if from smoke, pull to head of spine with cracks to top of rear joint and both hinges, fep's toned. Sixty-four woodcuts copied from a 1483 Dutch publication by Veldener, which were in turn taken from an even earlier work, now lost. The original thirty-two blocks were cut in half by Veldener for this 1483 publication, thus making these sixty-four. Heraldic bookplate of George Agnes Des-Geneys, showing a haloed lamb - used as an emblem of Christ - carrying the Templar banner of the cross and standing on a striped compartment, under a royal crown. Ref. Oliver, Heraldry, 1994; Conway, The Woodcutters of the Netherlands in the 15th Century, 1884. Bookseller Inventory # 494
