She was also an author of fiction books. In this work of historical fiction she draws from the adventure and romance of the Old Norse Sagas, specifically the Saga of Eirik the Red and the Greenlander Saga. It tells the story of Leif, Erik's son, who with his brother Thorwald, embark on their seafaring adventures between Norway, Greenland and America in the year 1000. Rather than focusing on the eventual discovery of Vinland, as related in the sagas, this story embellishes Leif's romantic entanglements: his passion for Gudrid, but also his love affair with Brenda (Thorgunna in the saga), and the child borne out the affair. Though he leaves Brenda, she eventually sends the child to Greenland to be with Leif. He is then rejected by Gudrid and further complications arise involving his brother Thorwald and his friend Karlsefni. Amidst this drama, Christianity is also being introduced to the Greenland settlers. Hough weaves a spellbinding tale of love, pride, courage, and cruelty, but was criticized by one reviewer of the time, William Hovgaard, himself a published saga scholar, for representing Leif as much less honorable and heroic than in the sagas. Such is historical fiction, and a good yarn. Copies of this novel are quite scarce. WorldCat shows 24 copies held by institutions worldwide. Bookseller Inventory # 002179
