About this Item

Brown cloth; light rubbing and soiling. Near fine. One of 99 copies printed. Marble (1834-1917) was the editor of the New York World, the leader of the radical opposition to Lincoln. Though a journalist of considerable experience, he was somewhat forced into the position of helming the voice of the Democrats after acknowledging that his efforts to create a financially viable independent newspaper would be unsuccessful. Manton was a strong opponent of both emancipation and a strong proponent of limitations on civil liberties such as the suspension of habeas corpus. Monaghan, 329. Bookseller Inventory # 12439
