Book Description Charles Scribner's Sons., New York., 1946. Hard cover. 204 p. Yellow cloth over boards. Red titles. Illustrated jacket w/ envelope, heart and piercing arrow. Fiction: Set on suburban Long Island. A divorcee has moved into town and 5 women who gather socially have each received a letter. Bluntly the writer announced she has gone off with one of their husbands. Which one? The 5 wives and the reader must learn which husband. The character development of each woman as she imagines the worst is intriguing. There are disturbing incidents and the reader is promised "a stirring climax". First appearing in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1945, this work's film rights were contracted with Twentieth Century Fox. Due to dramatic and time constraints, the screenplay was condensed to 3 wives' stories. Good in fair dust jacket. Ex-library. Rear jacket flap missing. Many library markings. Front spine flap damage at fold. Seller Inventory # Alibris.F4740008865

Book Description Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1946. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) "W.K." (illustrator). First Edition. [light dust-soiling to top and bottom edges, a bit of staining to binding along front joint; jacket a little edgeworn with a few tiny closed tears, minor chipping at spine ends, tiny bit of paper loss at lower right corner of front panel] Novel about five Long Island wives -- "presumably, married happily" -- whose lives are turned upside down and inside out when a message arrives (as they are conveniently all together) from a divorcee of their acquaintance, informing them that she's run off with one of their hubbies. The "sheer suspense" promised by the jacket blurb comes from the eventual discovery -- both by the ladies and by the reader -- of his identity. Originally published as a magazine story (Cosmopolitan, August 1945), it was expanded a bit for book publication early the following year, by which time the film rights had already been grabbed by Twentieth Century-Fox. The movie adaptation, which took almost three years to reach the screen, was originally going to be A LETTER TO FOUR WIVES, but writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (at the suggestion of studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck, who liked to keep his movies moving) lopped off one more wife, so the end product became A LETTER TO THREE WIVES. The 40% reduction didn't seem to hurt a bit, as the movie earned two Academy Awards, for direction and the screenplay. (And if Anne Baxter, who would have been the fourth wife, was disappointed to have been dropped from a Mankiewicz film, she made up for it with her Oscar-nominated turn in his ALL ABOUT EVE.) NOISBN. Book Description Scribner's, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1946. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. None Stated. A suspense novel of fives wives and which one has lost her husband to a divorcee from their circle. A light damp stain on the front panel of the DJ that does not penetrate. Mild edge chipping and wear. The yellow cloth is bright with light soiling in the gutters. There are a couple of white spots on the front cover that correspond to the damp stain on the DJ. They appear to be remnants of paper adhesions. The end papers and paste downs are tanned. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # 001790
