About this Item

1 handwritten letter, dated Dec. 23, 1845, from John R. Montgomery, Lancaster, Pa., to Dr. William Darlington, West Chester, Pa., asking for information about Dr. John C. Stanley, who was in debt to someone in Lancaster. Stanley said he would pay when he received money due him from his uncle Mathew Stanley of West Chester. Montgomery seeks confirmation of Stanley's claims. John R. Montgomery (1801-1854) was a prominent lawyer in Lancaster, Pa. Dr. William Darlington (1782-1863) was president of the Chester County Bank (or National Bank of Chester County), represented Pennsylvania in Congress, founded and was president of the Chester County Medical Society, and was a well-known botanist. Clearly, if he could vouch for Dr. John C. Stanley and his relationship to Mathew Stanley, Lancaster could rest easy. Matthew Stanley had been a director of the bank in 1839. Green Lancaster postmark and remains of red wax. In Very Good Condition: creased; address side is browning; small tear where wax was detached without impact on writing; otherwise clean and solid.
