About this Item

(PENN, WILLIAM). [POPPLE, William]. A Letter to Mr. Penn, With His Answer. [caption title]. [London. 1688?]. 8pp. Later three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Trimmed close, with some loss to header pagination. Some minor dust soiling, else very good. A letter written to William Penn from one of his advisors, William Popple, outlining the suspicions and accusations against him regarding his religious faith and purported actions in the name of Catholicism. The letter is followed by a savvy response by Penn, refuting the allegations, and encouraging religious freedom. In 1688 the birth of a Catholic heir, James Francis Edward, sent England into upheaval with speculation of a Catholic conspiracy. Penn's friendship with James II enticed scrutiny of his private life by those opposed to the king and a myriad of rumors regarding Penn's faith were quickly circulated. ESTC records six separate editions of this letter, and Wing lists it as the fourth. SABIN 59714. BRONNER & FRASER 84H. WING P2965. ESTC R19135. Bookseller Inventory # 72132
