About this title

Orange boards, dj with photo of Pearl Buck on back. First, 1957. "In this short novel are distilled many of the things Pearl Buck feels most strongly about: the continuity of family and the grip of one's roots in the nation and locality; the good and the bad that life holds for persons of mixed blood; the beauty of China...the wild beauty of Vermont...." Quoted from back flap.

From AudioFile:

This gentle love story is perfect for peaceful days at home. The lives of Gerald MacLeod, his wife Elizabeth, their son Rennie, and Gerald's father gradually come into focus as Elizabeth reflects on her life in China and their forced separation at the outbreak of the Communist revolution. Bonnie Hurren successfully uses slight changes in her pleasing voice to define each character. She reads in a clear and concise manner, making the story understandable. Her narration suits the story very well since it is told from Elizabeth's point of view. For readers who may have overlooked her, this is a wonderful introduction to Pearl S. Buck. C.W.
