About this Item

Millard Fillmore's law partner as a young man became President Fillmore's postmaster general in 1850, serving honestly and ably until 1852, at which point the outgoing president named him federal judge in northern New York, a post he filled until his death on March 2 -- six days later his old friend Fillmore died, and their graves lie practically side by side at the same cemetery in Buffalo. LS, 1p, 6½" X 8", "Post Office Department" [Washington, DC], 1851 December 1. Addressed "To all whom it may concern." Very good. Several small mysterious darkened areas visible though not terribly disfiguring. Interesting official-sounding note on pale blue stationery, noting that "The bearer, Eugene Vandeventer, is a Special Agent of this Department, and travels by my direction upon its business. Therefore Postmasters, Mail Contractors and all others in the service of the Post Office Department will regard and aid him accordingly." Circular blind-embossed Post Office seal at lower left. Usual enormous scrawled signature in dark brown ink. One wonders what unspecified postal business this "Special Agent" may have been undertaking. Bookseller Inventory # 28722
