About this Item

Thick octavo in violet blindstamped cloth. 597 pp. Frontispiece engraved portrait of the author. Apparently the first trade edition, and second edition overall, after a "Private Edition" of 400 copies published in 1855. A collection of letters written by Upham, a Bowdoin professor in mental and moral philospohy, most of which were first published in a Boston Congregationalist newspaper. In addition to his religious and philosphical works, he was also the author of an early work on abnormal psychology.A tight, very good example, spine sunned and gilt lettering rather dulled; foxing to the portrait and tissue guard and scattered occasional foxing elsewhere.
