Book Description Random House, New York, 1963. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. No Dust Jacket, As Issued. . Volume I: From Ghiberti to Gainsborough: 287 pp, Introduction; Early and High Renaissance: from Ghiberti to Durer; Late Rennaissance and Mannerism: from Michelangelo to Niclaus Manuel Deutsch; Seventeenth Century: from Lodovico Carracci to Sir John Vanbrugh; Eighteenth Century: from Giovanni Battista Tiepolo to Gainsborough; notes to the plates, sources and references, index with 150 plates, 51 in colour. Volume II: From Blake to Pollock: 287 pp, Introduction; Early Nineteenth Century: from Blake to Constable; Mid-Nineteenth Century: from Ingres to Manet; Impressionism and After: from Monet to Derain; Twentieth Century: from Kandinsky to Pollock; notes to the plates, sources and references, index with 152 plates, 59 in colour. First American Edition, 1963. "It is facinating and instructive to follow up, in the artists' own work, all the features which can only be briefly indicated here. The individual desting, the man behind the work, his attitude towards the public, even his connections and the restrictions set on his freedom, are no less important than the development of style, which has been increasingly discussed in histories of art. In the old days art historians would enumerate the main events in the lives of a number of painters and then perhaps go on to talk about 'schools'; but this method has gradually made way for the quet for styles and their transmutations, a straight- forward, impersonal 'history of perception'. Interest in the personality and fate of the individual artist is, however, too keen to be suppressed. Even in the most recent phase, for example, the letters of Van Gogh and Gaugain have played no small part in attracting the attention of the modern public to their writers. And that is why we think that his collection of letters and personal documents may be a help towards greater understanding of the work of these masters and a stimulus to closer observation of it." from the Introduction, Volume I. In Near Fine Pictorial Box with only the slightest wear to top and bottom insert edges. Lightly faded red of spines, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Red cloth with gilt-bordered black title plate and gilt lettering to spine. Size: Large 8vo.
