About this Item

London: Printed by T. Bensley, 1797. Two volumes, octavos, bound in more recent full diced calf, "rustically" tooled in gold on covers and spines, and with marbled endleaves. Printed title pages, if they existed, are now gone, leaving only the engraved title pages in each volume. xl, [iv], 1-325; [1]-366, with 16 stipple-engraved portraits. Spines worn and chipped, and joints starting, though covers still firmly attached. Engraved bookplate of G. Maitland Gordon. Title pages foxed, but rest of text on finer paper and pretty clean and bright throughout, excepting only a little offsetting from the plates. "Junius, the pseudonym of the author of a series of letters that appeared in the 'Public Advertiser' from 1769 to 1771, attacking with bitter scorn and invective, among others, the Duke of Grafton, the Duke of Bedford, Lord North, and Lord Mansfield in his judicial capacity, while George III is not spared the irony of the writer. The identity of Junius, which he concealed with great skill, has never been definitely established; but there are strong reasons for attributing the letters to Sir Phillip Francis. Lord Temple has also been claimed at the author."(Oxford Companion to English Literature). Bookseller Inventory # 7346
