Synopsis: This is the second volume of Bonnie Hurd Smith's multi-year project to publish the letter books of the eighteenth-century essayist, poet, playwright, and women's rights advocate Judith Sargent Murray. This volume contains letters written during the years 1785 to 1789, when Judith Sargent Murray's first husband went bankrupt and died leaving her widowed and poor, when she married the Universalist preacher John Murray and met John and Abigail Adams during their honeymoon journey, and when she traveled to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, York, Maine, and parts of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Smith's first volume, 'The Letters I Left Behind: Judith Sargent Murry Papers, Letter Book 10,' is also available through Amazon.com. Two small collections of Murray's letters by Bonnie Hurd Smith, also available through Amazon.com, are 'Mingling Souls Upon Paper: An Eighteenth-century Love Story,' and 'From Gloucester to Philadelphia in 1790.'
About the Author: Bonnie Hurd Smith is the acknowledged expert on Judith Sargent Murray. Along with the books mentioned above, she is the editor of four monographs of Murray's essays, the author of numerous articles and book chapters on Murray, and the founder of the Judith Sargent Murray Society. Ms. Smith is a popular speaker on Murray. She has given illustrated talks at such venues as the Massachusetts Historical Society, Boston Public Library, Old South Meeting House, Adams National Historical Park, Salem Maritime National Historic Site, and Chautauqua Institution in New York. Ms. Smith also leads Unitarian Universalist services on Judith Sargent Murray, who was an early Universalist in Gloucester, Mass. Bonnie Hurd Smith served as president of the Sargent House Museum in Gloucester (Murray's home) in the 1990s.
