First edition. Thick octavo hardcover. xxix+ 1010 with general biographical index, select family index. A tight, fine example but with a 1974 gift inscription front free endpaper. In crisp, price clipped dust jacket. Collection of Mrs. Gaskell's letters from about 1832 to 1865 containing all the letters that the editors were able to locate. Her letters reflect also her novels and other writings, showing in detail the social strata of Victorian England. In addition to the many letters written to ther family, Mrs. Gaskell corresponded with a number of literary figures inclusing Charlotte Bronte (whose biography she would write), Leigh Hunt, Ruskin, Elizabetn Barrett Browning etc. Bookseller Inventory # E17184
