Houghton Mifflin and Company, MA. 2 Volumes. Forbes was an abolitionist, an organizer in the introduction of Black troops and a railroad magnate. He wrote letters to Lincoln, Seward and Stanton about emancipation, observations on his travels to the South and more. Forbes was sent to England early in 1863 to buy ships for the Union. This copy belonged to the Massachusetts Commandery of the Loyal Legion. Edited by his daughter. Gilded page tops. Good+ copy of the first edition. Both volumes have a little wear to the spine tabs and shelf wear, otherwise very good. Volume 1 has 353 pages, volume 2 has 264 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 11
