Murray was one of America's " Envoys Extraordinary " to France and also served as Ambassador to the Batavian Republic . He also served as Congressman for six years . He died at the age of forty-two in December , 1803 . This publication features his correspondence with John Quincy Adams and also includes Adams' Memorium of Murray . Murray's official correspondence with Secretary of State Pickering is also included . Adams and Murray were close friends and this correspondence is rich and frank material giving a revealing look at the Republic in the John Adams and Jefferson administrations .
