About this Item

Full title: Letters Written on Board His Majesty's Ship the Northumberland, and Saint Helena; in which the Conduct and Conversations of Napoleon Buonaparte, and his suite, during the voyage, and the first months of his residence in that island, are Faithfully Described and Related. Bound with: Military Character of the Different European Armies, Engaged in the Late War: With a Parallel of the Policy, Power and Means of the Ancient Romans and Modern French. R. Ackermann, publisher. London: 1816. Stated fourth edition. Viii, 215 pp with a fold out facsimile of a letter and a plate depicting two seals. (for William Warden's Letters). Military Character printed for T. Egerton, Military Library, Whitehall. London: 1804. Stated second edition. 190 pages. Both bound together in red half-leather with marbled boards, page edges and endpapers. Raised bands on the spine, with gilt seals and titling. William Warden, a British surgeon serving on the ship carrying Napoleon to Saint Helena, developed a relationship with Napoleon during the voyage, and kept a journal of his conversations with Napoleon. As Warden's French was poor, most of the conversations were translated by Count de la Cases. Presenting a primarily favorable view of Napoleon, this work drew criticism upon its publication (see the Dictionary of National Biography). The second work, 'Military Character of the Different European Armies, Engaged in the Late War: With a Parallel of the Policy, Power and Means of the Ancient Romans and Modern French,' written anonymously, reflects primarily on the armed forces of the French, Austrian and English, providing a general overview of their perceived conduct in war and peace. This work appears primarily related to Napoleonic Wars begun in 1803, although also probably based on the rise of Napoleon and the French Army from the fall out of the French Revolution. VERY GOOD condition. Uneven minor darkening to the covers, with light scuffing and a hint of soiling. Moderate scuffing to the leather along the extremities, with a few small chips of leather missing along the hinges. Interior clean and solid with minor scattered foxing.
