About this Item

Second American edition of the famous work on the conduct of life, written by a medical doctor to his son in a series of letter and first published in America in 1794 following the London first of the same year. There three states of this edition: that with the imprint on the title-page reading as above, a second with the imprint reading "Printed for Mathew Carey, by James Carey," and a third similar to the second but with "Mathew" spelled "Matthew." The state offered here is the scarcest. 12mo. xi, [2], 14-261, [3] pp. (last leaf blank). Evans 29957; ESTC W13543. Publisher's calf binding, rubbed, a little sprung. Title-page and front pastedown stained. Pages a little cockled from exposure to damp. Last gathering of leaves a little extruded. In all, a good++ copy. Bookseller Inventory # 30971
