8vo., title-page with design. [32], 439 pp., [9]pp., including index & privilege leaf; 2 fold-out plates, one of ginseng, another of Chinese inscriptions. Contemporary speckled calf, with five raised bands, leather title label, gilt designs on the spine. This is "Receuil X" (volume 10) of the first edition of the famous series of Jesuit letters, published in France from 1702 until 1776. These regular publications of letters by Jesuit missionaries, stationed all over the world represent one of the most important sources on the outside world in 18th century Western Europe. By these letters the European intellectuals discovered in a passionate way the customs and history of exotic kingdoms. Both Voltaire and Montesquieu were indebted to them for their ideas on China and the Far East. This issue contains letters by the rev. de La Lane on India, Faure on the Philippines, D'Entrecolles on China , Jartoux on the Ginseng plant, the life of Cyprien missionary in Peru , Rev. Marest on Canada , Portier on the Greek isles Naxos, Siphanto (Siphno), Thermia. The letter by D'Entrecolles , dated 1715, contains a very early reference of small-pox inoculation as it was practiced in China (p.225). The outer hinges show some cracking to the leather, wear to spine ends, cover corners, edges. A near fine copy. Gives a long account of the Voyage to Hudson Bay made with Iberville in his Expedition to oust the British from the region, 1694-95; contained in pp. 268-327. Other Letters include material on: China, East Indies, South America, Philippines. Purchased originally from Wright Howes, Catalogue 70 (1945). French text. Bookseller Inventory #
