About this Item

Folios. 3 volumes bound in one. (16) 663pp. (44), (2) 54pp.* (16) (10), 184pp. (8). Contemporary embossed vellum with gilt embossed decoration and black lettering to spine. Raised bands. All three works are ground-breaking standards, both for the study of Ethiopian language and for the study of the history of linguistics. They constitute one of the first Ethiopian-Latin dictionaries and grammar books and, hence, introduced Ethiopian language and culture to the Christian world. The books appeared separately and were rarely combined, as is the case here. It is noteworthy that Walton used the Lexicon aethiopico-latinum for his New Testament Polyglot edition and this. Our copy of the Grammatica aethiopica is the second revised and corrected edition from the first London edition (1661), edited by Johannes Michael Wansleb. Ludolf was unsatisfied with the quality of the work and thoroughly revised the text. Text in Ethiopian and Latin. Separation to spine hinge, but complete. Scuffing, rubbing and staining to boards. Corners bumped and word. Browning, watermarks and occasional foxing to pages. Minor tears to edges of some pages. Library stamp to loose front endpaper. All three title pages in red and black lettering. The title pages of 2) and 3) are woodcut illustrated. In fair condition. *In 2), each page is divided by two columns. The pagination is according to columns, not pages, i.e. the page number reaches 103. References: Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed. (1911), vol. V17, p.114; C.
