About this Item

Octavo. Liber Sextus Decretalium (1586) [8], 622 [1] deals with the "Regulae Iuris" originally pubished in 1298. It is found here at the end of book VI and is now published as one of the five Decretals in the Corpus Iuris Canonici. Of course, at the time Pope Boniface VIII claimed final authority of the the church and the state. It was the abuse of papal power that Danate addressed in Part One of the Divine Comedy, the inferno damning him with the circles of Fraud. Bound with this volume is the massive work of Pierre Matthieu, Septimus decrtalium constitutionum apostolicarum post sextum.[16] 655 [81]. Here his extensive publishing of all the decretal rules with decisions made by individuals with the greatest accuracy and detail. He quotes authorities both papal and those in the universities which accordingly lack binding authority though canon law experts repeatedly found his high level of scholarship useful to place the decrees in their historical context. Together these volumes constitute the thread that binds canon law theory from the 13th to the 16th century. Bookseller Inventory # 016212
